First impressions are very important. Your performance during the first week on the job is crucial. But this future success must be prepared before the beginning of the internship. When you are confirmed for the job, it’s important to clarify expectations they have for the post. You have to make an agreement with your managers upon your job responsibilities in writing. The perimeter of your activities should be clear from your first day.
A few days before your arrival in the company, contact your tutor to remind him of your arrival date and that he can count on you. The business partner of the company or your supervisor will send you practical details of your arrival (agenda, location ...). You can also find out the latest news from your company and its products, looking for information about its strategic plan, annual reports to better understand the history, mission or challenges of the organization.
It's your first day! Remember that first impressions are crucial. Dress professionally, be polite, pay attention to everyone no matter their hierarchical level. Take advantage of meetings or corporate events to introduce yourself. You should meet every team leader and all your potential colleagues. Makes notes in your notebook, it will be your best friend during your internship. Feel free to ask lots of questions, you're not supposed to know everything that is happening right now, but the sooner you learn to know your environment, the better you'll be. To do this, try to schedule meetings with various team leaders within different departments.
To be sure that your internship project is moving in the right direction, exchange regularly with your supervisor. This is a good way for you to get feedback on your performance. Ask him for advice, both about your attitude and about your work.
It’s very important to show up to work on time, when you are expected. If you have any trouble, call your supervisor and you will get all the support you need to remedy the situation before it is too late.
The last piece of advice is to be a person with whom it is pleasant to work with. Reply quickly to your e-mails, attend meetings, be helpful and open-minded. Spend time with your co-workers and get to know them during lunch time or coffee breaks. Be wary of corridor gossip and people who complain constantly. Stay in a positive attitude!
